A large fantasy view of early 19th century London
GOSSELIN.
Vue de Londres. Vista de Londres.
Paris: Gosselin, c.1840. Coloured lithograph. Sheet 510 x 650mm.
Some restoration, backed with restorer's tissue.
An invented view of London, with two figures (Victoria and Albert?) descending stairs to board the Royal Barge on the Thames, perhaps at Westminster, with St Paul's Cathedral and Blackfriars Bridge in the background.
The artist has taken liberties with the topography and the figures; the costumes of the royal couple and their retinue look far more French than English!
